Many believe that Hawaiian pizza was first created in Canada in the early 1960s by a chef named Sam Panopoulos. Panopoulos was experimenting with different pizzas and then decided to add canned pineapple to his pizzas.  He then added ham to the pizza to balance the sweetness of the pineapple.
He created the unique flavor combination that is now associated with Hawaiian pizza.

By now, Hawaiian pizza has become popular all over the world.  However, it remains a controversial topic among some.  Some argue that pineapple does not belong on pizza.
